Tracing magnetic atom diffusion with annealing at the interface between CoMn alloy and MnGa layer by X-ray magnetic circular dichroism

The magnetic atom diffusion at the interface between CoMn alloy and MnGa layer with annealing is studied using X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) analysis. We found that the spins in bcc CoMn are coupled parallel to those in perpendicularly magnetized MnGa layer under the as-grown conditions, while the post annealing modulates the interfacial magnetic coupling to antiferromagnetic in Co. The elementspecific hysteresis curves at each absorption edge revealed the large coercive fields in Mn and Co through the exchange coupling with MnGa. After the annealing process, the changes of XMCD spectral line shapes are related to the interfacial reactions promoting the formation of Mn and Co$$_{2}$$MnGa layers, which is deduced from the analysis oftransmission electron microscopy. The interfacial diffusion of Mn atoms modulates the magnetic exchange coupling between Mn and Co sites and reverses the direction of perpendicular magnetization.

We have performed swift heavy ion irradiations in Fe-50at.%Rh alloys at room temperature. Before and after the irradiations, the magnetic properties and the lattice structure are measured using Superconducting QUantum Interference Device (SQUID) and X-Ray Diffractometer (XRD), respectively. We have also performed X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism (XMCD) measurement near the Fe K-edge at the synchrotron radiation facility, SPring-8, to examine the irradiation-induced ferromagnetic state near the specimen surface. We have found that the swift heavy ion irradiations induce the ferromagnetic state in Fe-50at.%Rh alloy below the antiferromagnetism-ferromagnetism transition temperature of the unirradiated alloy and the lattice expasion by 0.3%. For the specimens irradiated with swift heavy ions, we observe the XMCD spectra correponding to ferromagnetisim, which depend on the mass of irradiating ions and/or irradiation fluence. Effects of energy loss through electronic excitation and elastic collisions on lattice and magnetic structures of Fe-Rh alloy are discussed.

The electronic and spin states of [Co/Pd] multilayered perpendicular magnetization films with various seedlayers have been investigated by means of soft X-ray absorption and magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy at the Co ${it L}$$$_{2,3}$$-edges. The expectation values of the orbital angular momentum $$<$$${it L}$$$_{z}$$$$>$$ and the spin angular momentum $$<$$${it S}$$$_{z}$$$$>$$ of Co atom in the [Co/Pd] multilayered film were estimated using the sum rule. It was found that the seedlayer changes macroscopic magnetic properties of the [Co/Pd] multilayered film without affecting the electronic and spin states of the upper layers of Co.
